As the temperature drops, our bodies become less resistant to cold viruses, which cause coughs, runny noses, sore throats and influenza type symptoms. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 22 million school days are lost annually in the United States due to the common cold. Children have about 6 to 10 colds a year. One important reason why colds are so common in children is because they are often in close contact with each other in daycare centers and schools. In families with children in school, the number of colds per child can be as high as 12 a year. Adults average about 2 to 4 colds a year, although the range varies widely. There is no cure for the common cold, i.e. there is no treatment that directly fights the virus. Only the body's immune system can effectively destroy the invader. Available treatments therefore focus on relieving the symptoms.

Things you’ll need:

  • Time

  • Lozenges
  • See list in Tips section

Step1

SLEEP:
Contracting a virus is a sign that we need to slow down - be sure to have early nights and take things easy during the day. Rest is one of the main ways in which we can strengthen our immunity.

Step2

Wash your hands.
It's the single most effective way to keep from catching a cold or spreading one to someone else

Step3

Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
Using your handkerchief or a tissue as a barrier will help keep germs contained.

Step4

Practice healthy habits.
Eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep and exercising can help you maintain a strong immune system to keep illness at bay.

Step5

Avoid sharing with people who have colds.
Sharing food, drinks, utensils, dishes or cups with anyone who has a cold will greatly increase your chance of getting the virus.
